The Oromo Self-Help Organization (OSHO) is a non- profit, non-political and non-religious humanitarian organization founded in 1991 with the aim of contributing to relief, rehabilitation and development efforts in the Oromiya Region.

Since its establishment OSHO had been engaged in the implementation of relief, rehabilitation and development activities in different zones of Oromiya. In the process the organization has improved its capacity and smoothly shifted from implementation of only relief and single sectoral development projects to multi-sectoral / integrated development programmes that focus on food insecure woredas of Oromia. Oromia Region Youth Association
 

1. Goals
o Strength the leadership quality of youth association leaders at all level.
o Strengthen /justify the youth Association
o Reduce the rate of the spread of HIV/AIDS in youth Association and community in general.
o Make the Association self sufficient in budget through different mechanism.
2. Objectives
o Strength the administration of youth Association through reorganizing or restructuring fully reorganizing or restructuring fully regional , zonal and 50% woreda youth association leaders.
o Establish youth association on all kebeles and produce 1.5 million members.
o Make awareness of their right for 1.5 million youth association members.
o Make members to earn their own income from resources around them in their environment.
o Solve a social problem of 50% of the Association members
o Strengthen 202 woreda established HIV/ AIDS clubs and establish 6202 clubs on kebels to teach the members on how to protect them selves from HIV/AIDS.
o Create source of income for the association so that it will earn about 4.5 million birr per year.

3 Vision
OYA vision is to see fundamental changes in the livelihoods of youth in Oromia in general and members of the association in particular through their participations in and benefit from economic, social and cultural aspects undertaking in the region.
4. Mission
Organize, motivate and create awareness to make youth healthy, productive, responsible confident, good citizen and struggle for his right.
5. Interventions of OYA
Politically exercised democratic right
• Organized 284,228 youths.
• Youth become voters and candidates for election in the general assembly in a congress held at regional zone and kebele level.
• Participated in different regional council congress to keep the rights of its members

Economically
• Helped about 215 youth to get employed.
• Skill training for 824 youth on computer skill, photographing.
• Provided credit service for youth by providing 45,000.00 Birr.
• 249,596 youth participated in different development activities. When converted to cash is estimated to 1,950,234.75 Birr.
Different seedlings covered 188.5 hectares of land.
Socially
• Opened 3 libraries at 3 different towns.
• Aware 127,171 youth and other members of the community on HIV/AIDS.
• Train & established 8902 Anti HIV/AIDS club members.
• 1603 youth working on environmental sanitations.
• Provide access to basic education for 4559 in 8 zones & 40 Wordas.
• Established sport clubs in 61 Woredas.
Future interventions areas of the associations
• Strengthening the structure of the association at all level.
• Strengthening the existing members and recruit other news members to the associations.
• Motivate the youth to struggle for his rights and become beneficiary.
• Participate in election held in the country and to keep the rights of the members and the community.
• Participate in environmental protection& rehabilitation activities.

• Work to diversify income-generating activities of the association.
• Provide access to basic education for illiterate members of the association.

Oromia Credit & Saving Share Company (OCSSO)
 

1. BACKGROUND

Oromia Credit and Saving Share Company [OCSSCO] is one of micro-financing institutions operating in Ethiopia. OCSSCO is a transformation of Oromia Rural Credit and Savings Scheme Development Project. The transformation to OCSSCO has taken place on August 4, 1997 following Proclamation number 40/1996 that was issued for Licensing and Supervision of the Business of Micro-Finance in Ethiopia. The transformation was required due to significant achievement during the project phase, as most of borrowers have demonstrated improvement in their life.

2. VISIONS

OCSSCO aspires to see the eradication of poverty by contributing in the transformation of the rural poor into a prosperous industrial society and eventually transforms itself to a model development bank and become model financial institution in the World.

3. MISSIONS

The mission of OCSSCO is to provide need based financial services to strength the economic base of the low-income rural and urban active poor of Oromia through increased access to financial services.

4. SERVICES DELIVERED BY
OCSSCO

OCSSCCO believes that financial services are one of the most important tools to reduce poverty. With this guiding principle, OCSSCO has designed and delivered three major products:
• Credit Services at affordable rate
o Micro-loan for rural poor
o Small & micro-loan for urban enterprises
• Saving Services at attractive rate
• Micro Insurance service for its loan-clients

5. TARGET GROUPS

OCSSCO provides credit services to the poor with especial emphasis on rural economic set-ups. Regarding saving services, it is open for all classes of the society irrespective of their economic background, yet with specific targeting to the poor as well as individuals and institutions. OCSSCO has again two savings products:

• Compulsory saving for the clients
• Voluntary Saving for both clients and non-clients.

6. LOAN PURPOSES

Since the Institution’s target groups are the poor and the objective is poverty reduction, and contribute to economic growth of the Regional State, i.e., Oromia, OCSSCO deliver loans’ for the productive purposes only. Strict loan supervision procedures and mechanisms are in place to ensure loans given are not used for consumption or mis-utilized.

OCSSCO’s financing or loan purposes are:
• Agriculture - livestock fattening, dairy farming and crop production,
• Petty trade – trading cash crops, grains and cattle, rural shops
• Service Activities – Restaurants, Tailoring and etc.
• Handicrafts – blacksmithing, pottery and waiving
• Technology financing- Motor pump and others
• Small and Micro-Enterprise financing such as woodwork, metalwork,, textile and garment and leather products

7. ACHIEVEMENTS

OCSSCO has been operating in the largest Regional State of Ethiopia, Oromia National Regional State. Furthermore, the Institution has been operating in 91 districts, with over 524 employees. During the last eight years, the Institution has served significant number of poor clients with 86,996 active loan-clients and total portfolio of Birr 88.64 million [US D 10.22 million] as of June 30,20004. Besides, there was a remarkable increase on the performance trend for important indicators, such as client and portfolio outreach, and portfolio quality.

Similarly, saving mobilization has shown tremendous improvement over the last five years. Although, most of savers are clients, recently non-clients are also interested to deposit money with the Institution. Moreover, the saving trend is again promising.

Oromia National Regional State
Women Association

  1. Introduction

Oromia Region’s Women Association is a gender based association in which women are organized on their own free will to struggle for their rights and to solve their political, social and cultural problems.

Based on this goal, the association obtained a legal recognition from Oromia Justice Bureau on January 30/1993 E.C. and currently owned more than 500,000 members in 16 zones, 197 districts and over 6000 kebeles of Oromia National Regional State. Oromia Women Association is a non-governmental organization that has already strengthened its public base.

Concerning its organizational structure, the association has formed the executive committees composed of five members at respective zones’ districts and kebeles. The responsibility of these committees is to the general assembly.

2. Vision of the Association

The vision of Oromia Women Association is “to see the rights of women fully respected in the region and equal participation of women with men in the region’s political, economic, social and cultural activities”.

3. Missions of the Association

Oromia Women Association has the following missions to realize its vision.

- Make its members enthusiastically participate in the activities of poverty reduction especially in the activities of food self sufficiency by increasing their awareness through training

- Create and develop its members’ capacity in political and social activities through trainings and devising ways of obtaining credit services

- Create a good condition for its members to attend formal and non formal education to improve their knowledge and consciousness

- Plays a principal role in the process of building a democratic system and promoting women’ rights

- perform a continuous works to raise women’s consciousness on how to prevent themselves from HIV as they are the most vulnerable section of the society

- Work in coordination with other organizations that are engaged in the prevention and eradication of the influence of harmful customary practices

- Boost the financial capacity of the association step by step by creating different means of income generating

- Widely participate in advocacy and teaching activities to influence governmental and non governmental organizations as well as the community at large to pay particular attention to the women’s rights

5. Principal Goal of the Association

The main goal of the association is to carry out the activities of capacity building in all directions to enhance the consciousness of its members to benefit from and participate in the political, economic, and social activities of the region especially in poverty reduction efforts.

Increase the capacity of women in the region so that they can actively participate in economic development and poverty reduction activities
Improve women’s livelihood and economic situation by creating means of income generating for them
Encourage the women to join the association so as to increase the number of members and build the association’s all round capacity
Play a leading role to strengthen the women’s education participation at all levels
Coordinate the struggle of the members to eliminate harmful practices and actions that are against women’s rights
Strengthen the association’s financial capacity through different activities
Perform consecutive and continuous works to bring about behavioral changes in the community as HIV and AIDS has a high impact on women
Work on the reproductive health rights assurance to improve the women’s health situation
Strengthen the existing relationship with other peer associations
