Oromia is endowed with substantial energy resources including hydropower,
biomass, solar and geothermal resources. Increasing the supply of
energy and utilising energy resources efficiently would be critical
for accelerating the development of the regional economy. The starting
point for a rational development of the region’s energy resources
is to have an accurate inventory of available resources, both renewable
and non-renewable. The major factors constraining economic development
in general and the energy sector in particular in Ethiopia in the
past were misguided policies pursued by past governments. In order
to reverse the negative effects of past policies, the Federal Government
of Ethiopia has formulated an energy sector policy, which ensures
an equitable allocation and effective utilisation of energy resources.
