MINERAL RESOURCES
Oromia is endowed with a variety of mineral resources. However, the mineral sector remains the most insignificant part of its economy and contributes only about one percent to the regional gross domestic product.

Mineral deposits known to exist in the region include metallic minerals such as gold, platinum, tantalite, nickel and iron; industrial and construction minerals such as limestone, system, silica sand, soda ash, quartz, diatomite, marble, asbestos, feldspar/mica graphite; energy minerals such as lignite/coal oil shale, and geothermal resources; and agro-minerals such as phosphate which occurs in Western Oromia is important for the development of agricultural inputs.

The querying activities of sand and construction materials stone around Finfine and in East and West Shewa zones could also be considered as the main sources of income for the farmers and revenue for the government if properly planned implemented.

Although there are occurrences of varieties of mineral resources in Oromia that have been proved on the basis of varying exploration, they have not been put to use for the benefit of the people. The sector is still at its infancy and constitutes a small fraction of the income of the region.
