WATER RESOURCE AND WATER SUPPLY
Potential

Oromia is endowed with high water potential, abounding with many rivers and lakes. The region has an estimated surface water potential of 58 billion m3 and renewable groundwater potentials of 23.5 billion m3. Oromia is drained by seven major river basins whose headwaters for most part are in Oromia, which includes Abbay, Awash, Baro, Ganale-Dawa, Omo-Ghibe, Wabeshaballe and the Rift Valley lakes.

The region's water resources potential could be developed and used for the provision of water supply and irrigation. Moreover, huge hydropower could be generated to supply clean energy for domestic and industrial consumption thereby conserving forest resources and minimizing environmental degradation. However, only limited efforts were made to develop and effectively utilize the water potential in the region for various purposes. To this effect the analysis of use of water resource potential of the state has been made relying on the available data.
