Title:  Credit and saving association gave more than 5 million birr loan

Arsi – April 28, 2008

Egu branch of Oromia Credit and Saving Association in Arsi Zone of Oromia region said it has given more than five million birr loan to 2847 low income citizens over the past three months.

Obbo Demise Abebe, head of Egu branch office of Oromia Credit and Saving Association, said more than five million, seven hundred thousand and twenty thousand birr loan was given to low income farmers and town dwellers in the past three months; adding that out of 2847 total beneficiaries women constitute 719.

The loan beneficiaries are engaged in different business activities including animal fattening and retail trading, O.I.P.R.B. reported.

Title:  Income generating project for women living with HIV inaugurated

Ambo – April 28/2008

The projects intended to generate income for women living with HIV/AIDS executed with more than a hundred thousand birr at Ambo town in West Shewa Zone of Oromia region was inaugurated and commenced operation. The fund for the implementation of the project was secured from African Women’s Development.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony aadde Bethlehem Ashabir, chairman of the association of women living with HIV/AIDS named “Negem Lela Qen New”, pointed out that the association executed immense income generating activities for women living with HIV/AIDS since its establishment in 2007.

Adde Bethlehem added that stationery shops, equipments used for secretarial services like computers and photo copy machines were set up with a hundred thousand and four hundred forty five birr obtained from African Women’s Development.

She called upon members of the association, 19 women, who become the beneficiary of the project to properly utilize and improve their livelihood with the income they obtain from the business, and to be a good exemplary for other women.

Adde Bethlehem also expressed her gratitude to Ambo Town Administration for providing the land used for business activities free of charge, Oromia Information and Public Relations Bureau reported.

Title:  Some 39 municipalities of Oromia pledge to strive for prevalence of dev't, good governance

April 27, 2008 (WIC) - Some 39 municipalities of Oromia State expressed their readiness to contribute to the growth of the towns by integrating their efforts in the drive for the prevalence of development and good governance.

Speaking at the conclusion of a nine-month performance evaluation of the municipalities yesterday, the mayors and town administrators vowed to improve their weaknesses and build on the strong ones to enhance development and good governance.


They in particular pledged to center the public in executing urban development and good governance packages, and to design programs that benefit the youth and urban dwellers.


Oromia State Works and Urban Development Bureau Head, Tekletsadik Reba, on his part said municipalities with low performance should learn from the experience of others and strive for the elimination of poverty and backwardness.


Municipalities should better implement the good governance and business process reengineering programs, he said, pledging that the bureau is ready to provide all the necessary support.

Title:  The youth pledge to contribute their share in the efforts to boost economic development, good governance

The youth reaffirmed their commitment to contribute their share in the efforts to boost economic development and good governance in the region.

They renewed their promise to enthusiastically participate in all aspects of development activities and in the enhancement of good governance after they attended awareness enrichment training offered to more than 16 thousand youth at Kuni wereda in West Hararge Zone of Oromia region.

The training was given in the past nine months to increase the youth’s awareness on various issues such as good governance, HIV/AIDS and improvement of work culture, Kuni Wereda Youth and Sport Affairs’ Office head Obbo Jafar Awal said.

Obbo Jafar pointed out that Some 403 youth are engaged in animal fattening and farming as well as in trading businesses with more than 500 thousand birr they secured from government in loan to reduce unemployment.

The participants called on the government to offer continuous awareness enhancement trainings so that the youth could actively participate in development endeavors, O.I.P.R.B. reported.
